Liverpool have held talks asking about SC Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu and have had their transfer team jet out to scout him playing for Turkey against Russia, according to Turkish-Football.com.

The website report that Liverpool have made initial enquiries with Bundesliga side Freiburg over the 22-year-old, having impressed with the German side over the past two seasons, with Premier League rivals Arsenal also said to be interested in the 6’1″ (source: Transfermarkt) centre back.

The 16-cap powerhouse played the full 90 minutes for his national side in a 1-1 draw with the World Cup hosts on Tuesday, and it is said that the Reds had scouts in place to keep tabs on the young defender as he lined up at the heart of defence.

Good move for Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp knows that as potent an attacking threat the Reds pose, they will never win anything if their defence is not bolstered soon, and it looks as though a new centre back could be top priority for the German.

Soyuncu has not had that much experience of top flight football, with 50 Bundesliga appearances under his belt, but the fact he has picked up 16 international caps shows he is hotly rated by those back in Turkey.

With the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip already at Anfield, his capture would likely put him as backup to the first team to begin with, as he gets acclimatised to the cut and thrust of the Premier League, but he certainly seems to have a lot of promise.

Likely to happen?

It seems as though a move is in its initial stages and there is a long way to go before he is holding a red shirt in front of the Kop.

Arsenal are said to be keen and there will likely be other clubs waiting in the shadows to pounce, but at least Liverpool have got the ball rolling.

It could well depend on how desperate they get, as well as the sort of asking price Freiburg have slapepd on his head.
