Liverpool have ramped up their interest in £18-million rated goalkeeper Nick Pope from Burnley, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Reds are stepping up their interest in the Burnley shot stopper by conducting a round of background checks in order to build up the information they already have on him.

The 26-year-old keeper is being seriously considered by the Anfield outfit as they seek out a new number one this summer to replace Loris Karius, having had a brilliant season after replacing injured teammate Tom Heaton in September as the Clarets’ first choice goalkeeper.

Pope has had a fantastic breakthrough season for Burnley, which has been rewarded with a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup. Having been linked to Allison and Jan Oblak recently, the England international would be the perfect, cheaper alternative for Liverpool, rather than players like Oblak for instance, who will command a world-record breaking fee in order to land him. The stopper was named both the Burnley fans’ and player’s player of the season in the 2017/2018 campaign, and his recent form has caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp, especially after earning a spot in the World Cup squad ahead of the once established England number one Joe Hart. He was thrown into the deep end by Clarets boss Sean Dyche after Heaton sustained an injury early on in the season, but has since stepped up to the plate and proved what a top-class goalkeeper he is.
