Everton striker Wayne Rooney is set to finalise his move to MLS outfit DC United tonight (Monday, 25th June), according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports on their website that the 32-year-old will finally make the move from Goodison Park after signing for Everton on a free transfer in 2017, with his new deal for DC United amounting to a seven-figure fee of £3.75million.

The forward – who netted 11 goals for the Toffees last season – had reportedly been deciding whether to remain on Merseyside following the appointment of new boss Marco Silva, but eventually set his sights on playing out the rest of his career in America, with a completed move said to be just hours away.

OPINION

The former England international has made the right choice for his own career to move to the MLS outfit. With a new manager arriving at the club, it remained to be seen whether Rooney would be a part of his new plans for the season as he bids to push for the top six. At the age of 32, Silva would have been wanting to bring in new talent for his strike force, rather than use Rooney as a fringe player. Rooney would have undoubtedly felt that he may only play a small part at the club for the forseeable future and that he cannot play as competitively as he once did, meaning a move to America would help ensure that he can get regular starts without the spotlight being on him. A few former England players have also ended their careers in the MLS, for example Steven Gerrard, and it is a good move for Rooney to follow suit.
