Everton must forget signing Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Sky Sports have reported that the Toffees have shown an interest in the attacking midfielder, who was at one point the Golden Boy of German football – scoring the winner in the World Cup final four years ago.

The truth of the matter is that Gotze, now 26,  is not the player he once promised to be.

Injuries, on top of a drop in confidence due to poor form, have seen the player become a bit-part figure in the Borussia Dortmund side.

During his first stint with the Bundesliga Club under the then manager Klopp, his reputation as an exciting, creative, and dynamic playmaker was clear for all to see.

If the Blues sign him now, while it would seem he is not at his peak, the Everton faithful would not be happy as they often criticise their club for signing top names of the game who are no longer in their Hay Day – Wayne Rooney was a prime example of this.

With Farhad Moshiri’s millions now backing the club,  the Toffees really ought to be in pursuit of players who are currently at the top of their game as they have the financial clout to match some of the Premier League’s best sides.

Gotze will be an exciting talent for somebody, but there is no reason for the Toffees to take the gamble.
