Everton face firm competition from Championship outfit Middlesborough as they register their interest in signing non-league sensation Josh Heaton, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports on their website that Everton have been impressed with Darlington centre-back – who started out at Preston North End – after he stole the limelight at Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy, which aims to give non-league players the chance to attract interest from league scouts up and down the country.

The 21-year-old gave solid performances throughout the week-long event, as he also attracted the attention of Middlesborough – who finished 5th in the Championship last season – who provide stiff competition for the youngster.

Good move for Everton?

Should the Toffees snap him up after registering their interest, it is unlikely the defender will come anywhere near the first team for a while.

However, Heaton appears to be a promising talent, having caught the eye of Everton scouts. He will gain invaluable experience at the club and will continue to progress as the years go by.

At 21, he is still young and still has time to improve and nuture his talent for the future, in which he is sure to become closer to the first team.

Likely to happen?

With Heaton also attracting the interest of Middlesborough, it appears the two clubs will be in competition to sign him – but whatever happens, he should join one of them.

Everton may seem the most appealing choice due their Premier League status, and they would be hoping to use this as an advantage when it comes to moving for Heaton.

Middlesborough would also be an attractive choice, but a move to Goodison Park appears to be more likely for the Darlington man.
