Everton have submitted a bid for Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard, according to a reliable journalist.

Freelance journalist Pete O’Rourke, who occasionally writes transfer news for ESPN, claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon that Everton’s Premier League rivals Southampton are also in hot pursuit and have also made an offer for the 6ft 5in Bundesliga colossus [Transfermarkt].

Vestergaard is currently away on international duty with Denmark at the World Cup, where his nation will play against Croatia in the first round of knock-out fixtures.

OPINION

Everton’s defence last season was very inconsistent, and often allowed untimely goals that severely hindered the team. The Toffees conceded a huge 58 goals in one Premier League season, making for sixth worse in the entire league, so Silva has targetted the defence as a key area of weakness. Vestergaard is a goliath defender, and has shown signs of brilliance during his time in the Bundesliga. It is unknown at this time what the exact bid was, but Transfermarkt rate the 25-year-old’s current value at around ¢14million, which converts to £12.3million. This is not outside the realms of possibility for the Toffees, although it is understood that the wage bill is cause for concern at Goodison Park. With Ashley Williams not producing the consistency that is needed, and Phil Jagielka not getting any younger, Vestergaard could make an imposing duo with Michael Keane at the heart of Everton’s defence, which would be both tall and young. This could be the start of a new defensive era at Goodison, should Silva and Co be able to see off other interested parties such as Southampton, and win the race to his signature.
