Leeds United are on the verge of making the sensational appointment of former Lille boss Marcelo Bielsa just 48 hours after sacking Paul Heckingbottom, according to top journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian reporter, who works for Sky Sports and is heralded as a king of transfer news, has claimed on his personal website that the ex-Athletic Bilbao manager has held crucial talks with the Whites over taking charge in the dugout and that a decision over whether to join will be made over the weekend, with Heckingbottom having been sacked on Friday.

Bielsa, who is currently out of a job after being sacked by Lille in 2017, took Bilbao to the Europa League final when in charge, and his appointment would be a sensational swoop for the Whites after their troubles in the Championship.

Opinion

The ball is well and truly rolling on this one and it seems as though it could well have been going on behind closed doors for some time. The fact they have got rid of Heckingbottom now suggests as though talks have been productive and they are confident of closing the deal, leaving the former Barnsley boss unwanted at Elland Road. Bielsa has some serious pedigree to his name and there will be excitement building in Yorkshire over what he might be able to do with the Whites. With a reputation like his, he is likely to demand some serious spending and would likely not take the job if that was not promised. Last summer was all change at the club but it did not go according to plan, with Thomas Christiansen and a handful of flop signings. This summer has to be different, and in Bielsa, it looks as though they are getting off to a stunning start.
