While last summer saw Leeds United bring in a whole host of unproven talent, there was at least one name who looked as though they had the pedigree required to succeed.

The likes of Ezgjan Alioski, Samu Saiz, Pawel Cibicki and Pierre-michel Lasogga all had varying levels of success during their season at Elland Road, but one man who certainly fell well below standards was Vurnon Anita.

The Dutch star, who arrived on a free transfer after winning the Championship with Newcastle United, certainly seemed to be a quality capture considering his experience in both the Premier League, with over 100 top flight appearances, and the second tier.

His versatility, with an ability to play as both full back and midfielder, should have also made him an important member of the first team squad, but he struggled to have the impact many thought he would.

However, after being shoehorned in at left back for the first couple of games, he struggled to keep his place in the senior side, and ended up making just 22 appearances across all competitions, 18 of those coming in the starting XI.

Now the Yorkshire Evening Post are reporting that the 29-year-old, who stands at a diminutive 5’4″ (source: Transfermarkt), is set for the exit door once he recovers from his ankle surgery – but this is the wrong move for the Whites.

Cast out from the senior side, Anita has been nothing but dedicated during his time at Elland Road and he evidently has the talent to succeed, having been a big part of Newcastle’s time across two divisions.

With no manager in place, the club do not know what the next figure in will want, and a man of Anita’s qualities and experience could prove valuable.

He might not be a favourite among the fans, and he might not have dazzled during his debut season, but he certainly has a lot more to offer and the club must pull a shock u-turn over their decision to let him go.
