Aston Villa look set to have their first sale of the summer completed, as Atalanta opted to exercise their option to buy goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, following an 18-month loan spell, the Serie A club have confirmed.

The 23-year-old keeper has spent the past year-and-a-half on loan in Italy, and the funds raised can severely help the Midlands club in a financial sense.

Gollini made seven appearances during his time in Italy, and impressed the powers that be enough for them to warrant parting ways with a reported £3.8million to secure his services.

OPINION

This is a great piece of business by Aston Villa, Gollini was not in the plans at Villa Park, and the funds raised are vital in restoring the homeostasis of Tony Xia’s club, who are very strapped for cash. This move will allow Villa to stick to their repayment plan with HMRC, and brings them one step closer to avoiding liquidation, after the threat of a winding-up order. The 23-year-old is likely to become the number two keeper in Italy, which is higher than any spot he could have earned in the Midlands, so the funds earned are quite remarkable really. It is likely now that many names will follow suit, and leave Villa Park as Xia attempts to redeem the clubs financial credibility, and the easiest way to do that is to sell more players. Villa fans will be pleased to see that Xia is acting fast to ensure the club is bringing in finances, and outsourcing disposable players.
