Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is a target for three SkyBet Championship sides, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claimed on their live transfer blog on Monday [9:23am] that three Championship sides are closely monitoring Agbonlahor’s availability after he declined advances from clubs in Scotland and abroad.

The report also suggests that the striker is keeping an eye on financial developments from Villa Park, should the Villains decide to keep him after the expiration of his contract at the end of this month, meaning that there could be a U-turn on the cards for the senior player.

The 31-year-old made 391 appearances for his boyhood club over a 17-year period, scoring 87 goals, but was released this summer at the end of his contract.

OPINION

Any clubs that are looking at signing Gabriel Agbonlahor this summer need to think long and hard about their transfer strategy. The former Aston Villa striker used to possess lightning speed, which terrified defences across the country and made him a particularly dangerous player. However, that was really his only quality attribute and as he turns 32 in October, that pace is no longer there to make him a useful player. Even when he had his pace, his goalscoring record at Villa was not particularly impressive, scoring 87 goals in just under 400 appearances and was never a clinical finisher. Without the speed, there are no redeeming attributes. He couldn’t get anywhere near Steve Bruce’s first choice team last season and on the few times he did appear, it was only due to an injury crisis. Despite being a genuine fan favourite at Villa Park, even the Villa faithful were happy to see him go, what does that tell you?
