Nottingham Forest are reportedly close to completing a deal for defender Michael Dawson and it should be celebrated as a good move by manager Aitor Karanka.

The Daily Mail reports that the centre-back could move to the City Ground in the next 24 hours and perform a dramatic return to his boyhood club.

It is understood that Forest missed out on signing the 34-year-old back in the January transfer window, but have returned with another offer and his contract at Hull City expires this summer meaning he is available on a free transfer.

Karanka looks set to add Dawson to his squad ahead of the 2018/19 season and his arrival will signal a decent start to the summer business.

The Hull captain may not be getting any younger, but there is no doubt he could play a colossal role next season at the City Ground.

He was a mainstay for the Tigers this term and scored three goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.

His natural leadership and dedication is exactly the missing ingredient missing at Forest recently, which is why he can help them push up the Championship table next year.

Dawson will be a real senior figure in the dressing room and his know-how would certainly rub off on teammates.

Forest finished just 17th in the league table this season with 65 goals conceded and they need to finally try push back towards the promotion spots next year.

Adding players of Dawson’s calibre is exactly what is needed for the short-term future and his expected signature is genius by Karanka.
