Sunderland enforcer Jack Rodwell is the most likely player to join Rangers next, according to Football Whispers.

The football news site claims that Rodwell, 27, has a good chance of being the fourth signing of the summer at Ibrox, following Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy in agreeing deals with the Light Blues.

Sky Sports reported in April that the three-times England international earns a staggering £73,000-a-week in his deal at the Stadium of Light, even though Sunderland are facing League One football next season.

However it is understood that once his deal enters it’s final year in a matter of weeks, his wages will be slashed by 40 per cent.

Football Whispers claims that he could be Ibrox-bound this summer though, rating the likelihood of a move happening as being 3.3 out of 5.

The site gathers transfer rumours from across the world and rates them on the chances of them happening, with a score of 5 out of 5 meaning that it is a certainty.

OPINION

It would be more than a shock to see Rodwell signed by anyone this summer, and the chances of Rangers wanting to sign him seem ridiculous. The ex-Manchester City and Everton midfielder is on stupid wages at the Stadium of Light and he is bound to see out the final year of his contract in League One. It’s no wonder that Sunderland have been in financial trouble lately. Their transfer policy has been terrible in the last few years, overspending on players like Rodwell without having the sense to add a relegation clause into his deal. Rodwell made just three appearances in all competitions for the Black Cats this season as they were relegated to League One. If Mark Allen and Steven Gerrard think it’s a good idea to sign him then their heads need a good rattle because he is clearly someone who has made some very bad choices in his career and has completely lost any ability he once had.
