Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo made a massive mistake by decided to fork out £12.5million to sign Bournemouth forward Benik Afobe on a permanent deal.

Afobe, 25, re-signed for Wolves on loan in January, and the West Midlands club were able to tie in an option-to-buy clause if they wanted to snap up the ex-Arsenal forward for good.

On Wednesday, Sky Sports News reported on their official Twitter account that the Championship title-winners have decided to trigger that clause and splash a stunning £12.5million on the centre-forward – who made just seven league starts for the club between February and May.

What a waste of cash.

Just because Fosun may be able to bankroll a major transformation at Molineux this summer does not mean that they should just be throwing around money on players for sentimental value.

Afobe has tried and failed in the Premier League, and there’s no wonder why Bournemouth shipped him out on loan in January.

Eddie Howe could tell that the 25-year-old was not good enough, so why, for a club with Wolves’ ambition, would they spend such a large sum on a player who is probably not going to start a Premier League game next season.

Wolves fans will say ‘Afobe scored six goals in them seven league starts’. Yes he did. But those goals were against Leeds, Reading, Burton, Birmingham and Bolton – all of which except Leeds could have been or were relegated on the last day of the season.

Add to that the fact that the DR Congo international has scored just 10 goals in 63 Premier League appearances in his career and you realise that Nuno has wasted a lot of money here.

If only Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea were as easy to score against as Burton or Birmingham.
