Ex-Paris Saint Germain is set to be named as the Arsenal manager this week in what will be a dramatic turnaround from the club, according to a report.

The BBC claim that the Spaniard is the unanimous choice of the board after speaking to all potential candidates for the post.

It had looked as though Mikel Arteta would be appointed as the man to step into Arsene Wenger’s shoes after the Frenchman stepped down from the position after 22 years in charge.

However, it was said to be a move that many behind-the-scenes had deemed risky and it would now appear they have opted to go with experience ahead of inexperience in a massive call from those at the top.

Emery, 46, left his post at PSG in April after being informed by the French giants that they would not be extending his contract.

Opinion:

It is difficult to say how successful Emery’s time in the French capital has been. Sure, he had Neymar to call upon and yes they have won the Ligue 1 at a canter but the way they bombed out of the Champions League should be a cause for concern. Having said that, those kind of freak results are exactly that – they do not happen often. Gunners fans should look to the array of silverware Emery already has which really does speak for itself. While managing Sevilla, the Spaniard won three Europa League titles, making the La Liga side a force to be reckoned with, and it should not be forgotten that he has won six titles in his time at the helm in Paris – not a record to be sniffed at. Can he match Wenger though? Not with a reported £50million budget – as claimed by fierce Gunners fan Ian Wright – he can’t! Emery is an ambitious manager – now it is time for the board to match his targets.
