Tottenham are facing the prospect of losing Toby Alderweireld this summer with it being widely reported that he has rejected a new contract at the North London club.

The Manchester Evening News has reported that United have opened negotiations over signing the Spurs centre-back and Mauricio Pochettino must start looking for replacements.

ESPN has reported that West Brom’s Ahmed Hegazi is on the shortlist of names who can succeed Alderweireld, but he is nowhere near good enough on the ball and instead, Spurs must look to hijack Wolves’ bid to sign Porto defender Willy Boly on a permanent basis.

Sky Sports claimed in their live transfer blog on Thursday [04:46pm] that the Championship title winners have triggered a £10million option-to-buy clause in Boly’s loan deal at Molineux.

It is understood that Wanderers are close to completing the deal, but Spurs must make a last-ditch move to blow the West Midlands club out of the water to snap up their replacement for Alderweireld.

Boly, 27, ranked as one of the best passers in the Championship last season as Wolves stormed to promotion and would be a perfect addition to Pochettino’s squad without putting too much of a dent in the transfer budget.

He is a very physical defender too who is light on his toes and good in the air, so his passing ability is not all that he has to brag about.

The Frenchman may not be the most glamorous of signings that Spurs could make, but he would definitely be a good one and a much better target to go after than Hegazi.
