Rangers would have to spend a stunning £6.5million if they want to sign Peterborough forward Jack Marriott after it was reported that the League One goal machine is a wanted man at Ibrox.

Sky Sports claimed earlier this month that Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest are in the hunt to sign Marriott, 23, after he scored 33 goals in 56 appearances across all competitions for Peteborough this season.

Now, the Sun has reported that even more clubs are interested in signing up the prolific striker in the summer transfer window – and it would cost them a staggering £6.5million.

Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Aston Villa are also understood to be eyeing up Marriott and if Rangers really want to sign him, chairman Dave King must cough up the necessary funds for Steven Gerrard to seal a swoop.

Marriott can transform the Gers attack and really help the Glasgow giants close down the gap between themselves and double-treble winners Celtic.

If he even gets close to replicating his 33-goal haul in Scotland next term, he should be able to wrap up the golden boot award without any problems.

Jason Cummings’ future at Ibrox is not yet sorted with his loan deal expiring and Alfredo Morelos has a chance of attracting more bids from the Chinese Super League, so it’s not like the Light Blues are sorted in the centre-forward department.

Marriott would be a perfect addition to solve that problem and as long as King is able to give Gerrard the funds, this deal should be wrapped up as soon as possible.
