Rangers chairman Dave King has called for Gary Hughes to be suspended from the Scottish FA after a comment he made about Light Blues fans.

According to a report in The Daily Record, the SFA board member described the Gers faithful as “the great unwashed” back in 2006, leading to a furore on social media from the fans themselves who are up in arms about the reported slur.

And now after reading the comments attributed to Hughes, whereby he also admits to being a Celtic supporter, King has called for a response from the governing body of Scottish football, and an ” immediate and thorough investigation.”

Fans believe that this proves their sentiment that there is a witch-hunt against their side who were only recently charged by the SFA over their UEFA 2011 licence, and Hughes is believed to be a part of the team that sanctioned the charge.

This is looking like a matter which is not going to go away and there will undoubtedly be a response from the powers that be in the Scottish game to see what they make of the reports.

Hughes is due to for run for re-election but after these revelations, he might want to put those plans on the backburner for now.

Here is a selection of reactions on social media from Gers fans who are backing up King:
