Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has got talks underway over a potential loan swoop for Liverpool winger Harry Wilson who is also chased by Leeds United, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claim on their website that the former Reds star is looking to poach one of his old club’s top young stars this summer after his move to Ibrox, with Wilson having been under Gerrard’s stewardship in the under-23 side at Anfield.

It is said that he has already been in touch over the 21-year-old’s availability, with the diminutive 5’7″ attacker having scored seven goals while on loan at Hull City during the second half of the season just gone, but that he faces competition from Paul Heckingbottom at Leeds, who is also seeking reinforcements up front after the Whites’ disappointing campaign.

There is reportedly a fee of £250,000 set on Wilson’s head over a loan, with potentially more fees if he does not play the required amount of games.

Good move for Rangers or Leeds?

Gerrard obviously knows all about the youngster’s abilities and he has likely been looking through the Rangers squad picking out weaknesses – and the flanks are one area which certainly need strengthening.

Daniel Candeias has been the most impressive Gers star down the wings but the Light Blues need more if they are to push on and close the gap to Celtic next season.

As for Leeds, they could also do with more options out wide and considering their tight budget it should come as no surprise they are chasing loan captures as well as permanent deals.

Wilson dazzled for Hull, netting seven times in 13 appearances, and his proven Championship talents would be a much needed improvement.

Likely to happen?

If Gerrard has already been in touch then any other clubs chasing his capture, including the Whites, are at a major disadvantage.

Wilson has learned under the Anfield legend during his time with the under-23 side and would likely relish the opportunity to work with him again, playing senior football north of the border.

However, while playing in Scotland with Gerrard could have personal connections, he may well want to continue to prove himself in England, and if that is the case then Leeds need to sell him the ambitions they have over the next 12 months.

At the end of the day, it could all come down to Liverpool’s decision, and considering they know what Gerrard offers as a manager, the Light Blues are definitely going to lead this chase.
