Gary Lineker has wished Steven Gerrard well following his appointment as the next Rangers manager and described him as “smart, knowledgable and driven”.

The Gers confirmed on Friday afternoon that the 37-year-old will be the the next Gers manager and will move to Ibrox in the summer on a four-year deal.

His only coaching experience is with the Under-18s side at Liverpool, but he will now take the senior role at Rangers in Scottish football.

“Wish Steven Gerrard all the very best with Rangers. If he’s even half as good a manager as he was a player, he’ll be triumphant. Been great working with him on the telly. Smart, knowledgeable and driven,” Lineker wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Gerrard has now officially arrived at Iborx after days of speculation and the supporters will see him on the touchline at the beginning of next season. Some people will certainly see it as a huge risk to take the inexperienced Liverpool icon on, but the club are confident he ticks all the boxes. A successful playing career doesn’t mean he will be able to cut it at management, but the risk-reward is huge. The jury will be out on Gerrard until he manages to find his feet at Ibrox and until his style of play is imprinted on the team. His arrival at Rangers will certainly boost the profile of Scottish football in general and the prospect of him going head to head with his former manager Brendan Rodgers at Celtic is truly fascinating. He has an exceptionally big task to try help Rangers bridge the gap to their Old Firm rivals and get back in the mix for silverware, but he should be able to attract some high-profile names in the summer if he is back financially.
