The agent of Martin Skrtel, Karol Csonto, has stated that it would be “an honour” for his client to link back up with new Rangers manager Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

As quoted on Slovakian media outlet Pro Futbal, the player’s representative said: “Rangers are interested in Martin.

“I personally talked to Steven Gerrard about this possibility.

“Martin has sincerely said it would be an honour for him to play under Steven’s direction for three years.”

Skrtel is currently playing for Turkish side Fenerbahce but there are concerns that a £2.7million deal that the Light Blues were reported to have been closing in on, is anything but close to being completed.

With one year remaining on the player’s current deal in the Super Lig, Csonto admitted to Pro Futbal there is also a possibility of a move to China or the MLS in a dramatic turnaround, saying: “The only option in the summer transfer window is a market such as China or the US MLS, if it’s interesting for him, and if not, he will stay with Fenerbahce.”

OPINION:

After it was looking as though the deal was nearing its final stages, it would appear those projections were wildly far off the mark following these latest comments from the agent. Now that China and the MLS have also been thrown into the hat with regards to a potential destination, it would seem as though it has become a matter of whoever pays the most, will get the player. It is unlikely, given the vast sums of money in the Asian and American game that should it come to the crunch, Rangers will be able to match their financial strength. Should a transfer to the Scottish Premiership come off, it is likely it will be more about rekindling an old partnership than about who can offer the best salary. However, judging by Csonto’s comments, we would think that if Skrtel is wanting a last big-money move, the switch to Rangers might just be dead in the water.
