Rangers could up their bid for Brighton defender Connor Goldson to £2million after seeing an offer worth £1.5million rejected last week, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims on their website that Goldson, 25, is one of a number of centre-back targets that Steven Gerrard is eyeing up for the summer transfer window.

The 6ft 3in colossus, who has been a fringe player for Brighton ever since undergoing heart surgery, is said to be hoping that he can be allowed to talk to Rangers as a boyhood Liverpool fan who idolises Gerrard.

Good move for Rangers?

Goldson has not played a lot of football in almost two years after having heart surgery, meaning he made just eight appearances across all competitions for Brighton this season.

However it’s clear that the centre-back is still highly-regarded at Brighton and it is also understood that West Ham are interested in him, which is another good reason why the Gers should get a deal done.

The defence at Ibrox has been a clear weakpoint all season and it’s definitely where Gerrard needs to strengthen most.

Getting in Goldson and two other centre-backs should bolster the back-line.

Likely to happen?

Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen have not wasted any time in the transfer market after their season ended.

Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy have all been snapped up fairly quickly and it really won’t be a surprise to see Goldson arrive at Ibrox next.

However £2million is a lot of money for the Gers and they probably won’t want to spend any more than that in the coming months.

They should be able to pull off a deal though as Goldson seem keens on moving to Ibrox and he is not exactly a first team player at the AMEX anymore.
