Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow is hoping to extend his stay at the club as he holds shock talks over a new contract, according to the Chronicle.

The north east newspaper state that the 27-year-old shot stopper has been in negotiations with the Magpies to see his time at St James’ Park continue, having signed for the club back in 2014, and arrived a year later in 2015.

The 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) giant’s current deal is set to expire in 2020 but it is said he is happy in the region and that he has no qualms about committing to a longer deal.

News of such talks will come as a major shock to the Toon Army who would have been expecting the former Nottingham Forest man to leave after the club confirmed the capture of Martin Dubravka, the man who usurped him in the first team.

Opinion

Well that is a turn up for the books if the Toon Army ever saw one. Darlow’s future has been up in the air for the last 12 months with a move to Middlesbrough seemingly a done deal last summer. With Rob Elliot, the goalkeeper who took his spot at the end of their Championship campaign, still at the club, it seemed as though Darlow would be the one to make way this summer, but if he is happy to sit as number two behind Dubravka, then perhaps it makes sense to keep him on. Elliot, an older and wiser head, might be seeking more first team football and with Darlow content as understudy, moving on is the only way he is going to get that. This is not to mention what might happen with Freddie Woodman, the youngster set to return to St James’ Park after his spell at Aberdeen. Newcastle might be looking for new players, but they are well stocked between the sticks.
