Newcastle United player Jacob Murphy was given a huge opportunity to prove himself at the weekend against Watford and quite frankly failed the test in emphatic fashion.

The 23-year-old has had to make do with mainly cameo appearances for the majority of the season and has been heavily criticised by fans at St James’ Park.

However, manager Rafael Benitez gave him a reprieve to show his worth in the Premier League clash away to Watford.

The right-winger showed very little attacking flair or creativity, as Newcastle slipped to a 2-1 loss at Vicarage Road to make it three defeats on the bounce.

There were question marks over whether Murphy could make the necessary step up to the top flight after leaving Norwich last summer and this season has proven to be a real struggle for him.

Benitez must consider sending him out on loan to continue his development because right now he looks miles off the pace.

Newcastle must be starving for a top-10 finish in the league in the next campaign and Murphy is not the type of player in the squad that can help achieve that.

The Magpies can see that the £12million splashed out to bring the England Under-21 international to the club was overpriced and it seems unlikely he can live up to that price tag any time soon.

It would be best for Murphy to go play some regular first-team football elsewhere in either the Championship or a Premier League rival, to try help him rediscover the sparkling form that caught the eye in the first place.
