Everton have held behind the scenes talks over a potential swoop for Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe as new director of football Marcel Brands kicks the club’s summer business into gear, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Toffees’ new key man has already started getting involved in the hunt for a replacement to take over from Sam Allardyce, despite not officially starting his new role until next week, and that the club are aiming to make a decision by the end of this week.

It is said that those on the board at Goodison Park have discussed the possibility of taking Howe from the Cherries and onto Merseyside, which would be a shock considering former Watford boss Marco Silva is the firm favourite and in pole position.

Good move for Everton?

In terms of young English managers, there are few out there who have demonstrated the talent and quality that Howe has during his time at Bournemouth.

The Cherries boss might be baby-faced, and significantly younger than some of his counterparts in the English top flight, but he has shown the nous to get the best out of his players and have the south coast side overachieving for much of their time in the Premier League.

He might not be the biggest name the Toffees could go for but he is an exciting manager with a decent pedigree despite his age, and with Brands taking over as director of football, Howe’s likely lack of contacts would not matter as much.

Likely to happen?

Only if Silva does not join – which at present seems unlikely.

The ex-Watford boss is both available for no compensation and seeking a job, and with Everton clearly seeking someone who has an exciting edge about them after Allardyce’s tenure, he seems like the right choice.

Howe should be honoured to have been considered by those behind the scenes at Goodison but really he is second choice right now.
