Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen is likely to leave the club this summer after his Fenerbahce loan spell comes to an end, according to a reliable journalist.

Alasdair Gold, Tottenham correspondent for football.london, claimed in a fan Q&A on Thursday that the Netherlands international is on the chopping block come the end of the season, with Fenerbahce possibly interested in extending his stay.

During the Q&A, Gold was asked: “What is the situation surrounding Janssen? Is he destined for the exit door?”

He replied: “It would seem that way. Very few players return to Poch’s fold after a loan move away, unless they are academy players and even then it’s tough. Janssen has had an injury-hit season with a toe problem and goals have again not been a friend to him because of that.

“There’s a chance that he might get another year at Fenerbahce and if not, it’s likely he moves on elsewhere this summer. There’s a player in there, but he may have to emerge elsewhere.”

Janssen was an £19million signing from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2016, with the 23-year-old having become the Eredivisie top scorer the previous season with 27 goals in 34 games.

The Netherlands international however failed to live up to expectations at Tottenham, scoring just six goals in 38 appearances in all competitions last term.

He embarked on a season-long loan to Fenerbahce in September, where he scored three times in 13 appearances before a serious toe injury put paid to his season.

OPINION

It is no surprise to hear that Janssen is likely to leave Tottenham for good this summer. The Dutchman arrived with a lot of hype behind him but the gulf in quality between the Eredivisie and the Premier League was obviously too much for him to handle. There were glimpses of a good player at points in his Spurs career, but Poch has obviously written him off and will ship him off this summer. It is hard luck that his time at Fenerbahce has been cut short by his toe injury, but the Turkish club are making some noises about signing him on, and that would be a good move for all involved.
