Slimani stakes claim to summer move

When Islam Slimani joined the Magpies on loan in January, many fans saw the move as a brilliant one from the club as they looked to add firepower up front. The Algerian’s time at the club has however been marred by injury, and he was making only his second appearance for the club when he came on around the hour mark on Sunday. His lack of minutes had led many to believe that his chances of a permanent move to Tyneside were slim, but his display against the Gunners has reignited his chances. The 29-year-old was a handful for the Gunners defence, and helped set up the Magpies’ winner with a brilliant headed pass towards Ritchie, which was flicked on by Perez. If he continues this kind of form into their last five games, Newcastle will surely be considering a permanent move for Slimani this summer.
