Newcastle United fans on social media were beside themselves with joy after Aleksandar Mitrovic scored for Fulham against Sunderland on Friday.
The 23-year-old forward, who is on loan at the Cottagers from the Magpies until the end of season, scored in the 76th minute of Fulham’s game against Sunderland, to ensure his side won the match 2-1.
While Magpies supporters have regularly taken to Twitter to praise Mitrovic for his performances at Fulham, his display on Tuesday had fans gushing about their feelings for him.
Mitrovic’s winner against the Magpies’ bitter rivals, The Black Cats, ensured that they will not only be relegated from the Championship this season, but will finish bottom of the league.
One fan tweeted to point out that only two teams had ever finished bottom of the top-tier then finished bottom of the second-tier in consecutive seasons, before laughing about Mitrovic making it three teams.
Sunderland finished bottom of the Premier League last season and it is now confirmed that they will prop up the Championship table when the current campaign is officially over.
Several Magpies supporters praised the 23-year-old forward for inflicting misery on Sunderland, with one claiming they wanted him to be handed a lifetime contract at St James’ Park.
