Newcastle United fans are destined to have their hearts broken sooner or later after manager Rafa Benitez revealed his ambitions for the club.

The Spanish manager shared that he wanted to discuss his future as manager with the Magpies as soon as possible, before revealing the targets he personally had for the club.

“The situation is clear for me, I can feel the passion & ambitions of the fans,” said Benitez in his press conference ahead of his side’s game against Everton Monday, as quoted by the Chronicle Live.

“Now I just need to know the club match my ambitions too, I’d like to speak to them about that as soon as possible.

“Me and the club have to be on the same page, they know my idea, we know what every single fan is expecting, & we have to show we can do that.

“I want to be in at least the top 10 & then win trophies, be it the FA Cup, the League Cup or Europa League.”

While every Magpies supporter would love it if Benitez achieved his targets for their side, it seems unlikely as long as Mike Ashley owns the club.

For Benitez to be able to guide the Magpies to silverware or a place in the Europa League, he has to be handed the tools in which to do so. Tools such as new top-level players, and that costs money.

Ashley is unlikely to invest anywhere near enough in transfers to help Benitez’s cause, showed not only by his failure to spend in the January window but by his continued desire to sell the club.

The Telegraph previously reported that the businessman was set to try and sell the club once the Magpies’ Premier League status was confirmed for next season, after failing to sell the Newcastle United during this campaign.

While Ashley may start trying to find a buyer for the Magpies any day now, as Benitez’s side appear safe from relegation, a deal could still be ages away from being concluded.

Benitez in his press conference revealed that he was looking to find out whether the club could match his ambitions as soon as possible, so it sounds like he is eager not to waste his time waiting on a possible new owner. Especially if it takes a ridiculously long time to find one.

This means that even though Magpies supporters love the job Benitez has done at the club, it’s very likely that he will walkaway shortly once he realises his ambitions can’t be met at St James Park.

The Magpies manager’s decision to leave the club will no doubt break supporters’ hearts.
