The Magpies recorded a 2-1 win against the Gunners at St James’ Park, with Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie grabbing the goals.
However despite being happy over achieving an unexpected victory, fans were left unimpressed by Gayle’s role in the win.
The 27-year-old forward played 63 minutes of Sunday’s game before being subbed, with Islam Slimani taking his place upfront.
While fans at St James’ Park clapped Gayle as he left the pitch, supporters on social media weren’t so keen to give him any credit.
One fan tweeted that even if he was involved in setting up one of the goals, the forward had a stinker against the Gunners on Sunday.
While another supporter stated that Gayle couldn’t shoot, pass or dribble and was baffled at why Rafa Benitez continued to play him.
The centre-forward has regularly featured for the Magpies this season, making 32 appearances across all competitions.
Despite playing a lot of games during this campaign, Gayle has only managed to score five goals.
This Is Futbol has rounded up some of the best tweets about Gayle’s performance against the Gunners:

Can't dribble. Can't pass. Can't shoot. Why does Dwight Gayle play? #NUFC

Dwight Gayle's movement is top class but such as shame about his finishing #nufc

If we could just be a bit more effective when the ball hits the front two then I feel we can go on and win this. Gayle and Perez have shown lots of enthusiasm and good work rate but their use of the ball has been poor. #nufc
