Newcastle and Everton are in the hunt to sign Strasbourg striker Stephane Bahoken on a free transfer this summer, according to the Express.

The newspaper report that there are several clubs in the running to sign the 25-year-old, whose form this season has earned him a first call-up to the Cameroon national side.

The Express claim that Brighton are at the front of the queue for his services, with Championship side Aston Villa also keeping tabs on Bahoken, who has scored eight goals this season.

Newcastle and Everton are said to have sent scouts to watch the 25-year-old speed demon after he turned down a new contract at the Ligue 1 club.

Good move for Newcastle?

Bahoken is obviously in demand, but his figures from this season belie that interest.

The 25-year-old has netted eight goals in 27 appearances for Strasbourg, which is not a great return for a side sitting in 16th in Ligue 1.

For a Newcastle side that will be looking to make a push up the table next season, is an eight-goal striker from Ligue 1 really the answer?

However, the fact that this would be a free transfer makes it an interesting one, and for that reason this could be a move that vindicates Newcastle’s interest.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle do look in with a shout for Bahoken, although Brighton are said to be favourites.

The competition will no doubt make it a tough chase, and losing it may not be the worst thing for the Magpies.
