Newcastle United are in the race for a top-eight finish in the Premier League this season, but could be forgiven if minds are already starting to think about the summer transfer window.

The Magpies have done superbly well to avoid relegation on a restricted budget and supporters are now desperate for manager Rafael Benitez to be given an injection of cash.

He should be allowed to strengthen his squad and needs to bring in further Premier League quality to St James’ Park.

One area that needs further reinforcing is in midfield, where they had been struggling before the second half of the season resurgence of Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey.

Newcastle could do with another combative enforcer to play in the centre of the park and Crystal Palace ace James McArthur ticks all the boxes.

The Daily Mail reports that Scottish giants Rangers want to sign the 30-year-old in the summer, when his contract with Palace expires.

However, the Scotland international would prefer to remain in English football and that is why Benitez should swoop in for his signature.

McArthur’s future at Selhurst Park certainly looks unclear and Newcastle should try to add him to their ranks ahead of next season.

He is a midfield enforcer that would add some vital experience to the squad and his brilliant work-rate means he would slot in nicely under Benitez.

The energetic central midfielder can provide stern defensive cover, but also an attacking threat when he ghosts forward into the penalty area.

McArthur has five goals in 32 appearances across all competitions this season for Palace and would be a really shrewd piece of business by Newcastle on a free transfer.
