Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has deployed a chief scout to cast his eye over Feyenoord goalkeeper Brad Jones, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claims that one of the club’s top spies has been to watch the shot-stopper in action for the Dutch outfit.

He is the number one option in goal this campaign for Feyenoord and played a part in their Champions League campaign, while his side are also fifth in the Eredivisie table.

Jones previously spent a number of spells in England and most notably featured for Liverpool and Middlesbrough.

The Australian is an experienced player now aged 35, but has been in decent form this campaign with 12 clean sheets in 36 games for Feyenoord.

Good move for Villa?

Jones may be having a good season in Holland for Feyenoord, but he would be a poor target for Villa and they need to be targeting someone much younger.

Bruce’s side are hoping they will be in the Premier League next season as they compete for promotion this campaign.

They currently have the highly impressive Sam Johnstone on loan from Manchester United, but would reportedly have to fork out £6.5million for his signature.

Villa should certainly pursue Johnstone’s signature over veteran goalkeeper Jones as there is every chance he would struggle back in the English top flight.

Likely to happen?

It seems unlikely that Jones will make a return to England next season despite the fact his contract with Feyenoord expires in the summer of 2019.

Villa are only monitoring his situation as it stands and Bruce will surely wait until after a promotion bid before he starts planning for next season.
