Walter Smith shared that he thought Rangers needed money to invest in their playing squad and a consistent manager in order to be able to challenge Celtic for the title anytime soon.

The former Gers manager, in an interview with the Scottish Sun, revealed that he believes that the Light Blues were the “only team” capable of stopping the Hoops from winning 10 league titles in a row.

Smith went on to reveal that to be title contenders, his former club required stability regarding their manager and that the Gers needed to find a way to be able to spend more money on their team.

“To reverse that Rangers must get stability and an influx of a better level of player, that needs a level of investment,” said Smith as quoted by the newspaper.

“It is not rocket science, it is not as if you are going to get someone from Qatar or Russia to come along, but teams that have had that investment have been very successful.

“Every team needs to up their level of investment if they are to challenge and the Rangers board must try and find that.

“It’s been extremely awkward for them considering what they have taken over and that has to move on to the pitch.

“Rangers need a manager that is going to stay for a few years and try to get the club back to a winning formula again.”

Smith wouldn’t comment on whether Graeme Murty should keep the Rangers manager’s job beyond this season, but insisted he should be told whether he has got the job “sooner or later.”

OPINION

Smith knows a thing or two about winning trophies at Rangers, and it’s hard to argue with what he says. The only problem is, it’s easier to say a club needs money than it is to find a willing investor. While it’s true that the Gers have one of their best squads in recent seasons, and have a large number of players who have still not hit their peak, they still need to improve to compete with Celtic. The Hoops got the better of Murty’s side in the last Old Firm derby, even if it was just by the skin of their teeth, but top sides always find a way to win.
