Now that Rangers have closed to within touching distance of Celtic, the club face their toughest summer transfer window in recent memory as they look to pull level with their rivals.

Their successful January window paved the way to a promising end to the season, but that must be followed up with a similarly ambitious summer if they really want to challenge for the Premiership title.

It looks as though director of football Mark Allen is already on the lookout for potential summer signings, and one name that is being linked would be a brilliant signing for the club.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Rangers have made contact with Championship club Preston North End over a potential deal for striker Louis Moult.

The newspaper claim that the Gers have asked Preston to inform them of any developments with regards to the 25-year-old, who joined the club from Motherwell in January.

It is said that Moult is ready to consider his options this summer after failing to make an impact in Lancashire, and is open a quick return to Scotland with Rangers.

With Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos likely to move on this summer after big-money interest in recent months, the Light Blues will need to bring in a replacement.

Moult is the perfect man for the job as he looks to get his career back on tract after starting just three games since his £450,000 move south in January.

The former Motherwell man has found himself behind Callum Robinson and Sean Maguire in the pecking order at Deepdale, and a summer exit looks likely.

You only need to look at his goalscoring record at Motherwell to know that Moult has what it takes to succeed at Ibrox, with the former Stoke trainee netting 50 goals in 98 appearances at Fir Park.

That one-in-two record shows that Moult is a proven goalscorer in Scotland, which is exactly what Rangers will need for that gap to close fully next season.

Rangers know first-hand what Moult can do at that level, with the Light Blues being knocked out of the League Cup semi-finals after the 25-year-old netted a double against them.

They need to now bring him on side this summer and hope that he keeps up his eye-catching record as they hunt Celtic down for that first title in seven years.
