West Ham defender Patrice Evra has spoken out on his future at the club after the summer, saying he is ‘someone who lives in the present.’

The veteran left-back joined the Hammers in early February as a free agent on a short-term contract until the end of the Premier League season.

The 36-year-old was a free agent after being released from his contract with Ligue 1 side Marseille after kicking a fan during a heated confrontation.

With his contract with the Hammers only running until June, Evra’s future after the summer is up in the air, and the former France international has now spoken out about his upcoming decision.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, he said: “I am someone who lives in the present. I always say, “If you think about the past you can live with regret and if you think about the future you can live with uncertainty”, so the present is the most important thing.

“I’m focused on the present. I am happy at the moment but we have a massive job to make sure we stay in the Premier League, and we have some big games still to come really soon.”

Evra has made just two appearances for the struggling Hammers so far, both coming in 4-1 losses to Liverpool and Swansea respectively.

OPINION

It would be a surprise to see Evra given a new contract at West Ham. The experienced left-back is 36 years old, and is unfortunately on the way out. It is however clear why David Moyes brought him in to the squad for their relegation run-in. Evra is so vastly experienced at the top of the English game, having played for a dominant Manchester United team for so many years. He will be bringing every ounce of knowledge accumulated over that time into the West Ham camp, which is in dire need of a leader to step up and lead the way.
