West Ham and Newcastle are preparing to swoop for Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney this summer, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper report that the 27-year-old will be free to leave the Whites for £20million at the end of the season if the club fail to achieve promotion to the Premier League.

The Mirror claim that the Scotland international will have his pick of the clubs that want him if that happens, with Watford also said to be interested.

West Ham were in for Cairney during the January window but saw their efforts knocked back by Fulham after tabling a bid totalling £18million.

Fulham are currently in third place in the Championship, seven points behind second-placed Cardiff City.

Good move for West Ham?

Yes and no.

Cairney is obviously a brilliant player, and has been Fulham’s best performer on a consistent basis for several seasons now.

However, his injury record is not the best, as illustrated by the midfielder missing a large chunk of this season with a knee complaint.

That, allied to a hefty £20million price tag, means that this is not a move that comes without risks.

Likely to happen?

Well, this all depends on one thing: whether Fulham get promoted to the Premier League.

If that happens, then the Whites will obviously keep a hold of their star man.

If not, then West Ham look in for a big scrap with some close Premier League rivals to get their man.
