Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has slammed the club’s fans for their attitude towards Harry Kane before his first-team breakthrough, and poked fun at their chant for the 24-year-old.

The prolific forward was part of the Tottenham academy from the age of eleven, and went out on several largely unsuccessful loan spell before breaking into the first-team under Sherwood.

The former Spurs boss played a big part in Kane’s development in his role as an academy coach at the club, and has now spoken out on his development while slamming fans for their favourite ‘one of our own’ chant.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Sherwood said: “It obviously makes me proud.  Every loan I sent him out on, not one manager told me he would make a Premier League player.

“He struggled to convince the Tottenham fans at first. One of their own? It makes me laugh every time I hear it. They wanted the big name ending in ‘o’ to come into the team before Harry.

“I am not having that it was a golden generation. They just needed a chance.”

Since breaking into the first-team under Sherwood in 2014, Kane has gone on to make 204 appearances for the club, scoring an incredible 134 goals for the Lilywhites.

He has won the Premier League Golden Boot for the past two seasons, but faces a massive fight to make it three in a row this year with Mohamed Salah racing ahead while the 24-year-old recovers from an ankle injury.

OPINION

Will Sherwood ever stop talking about his time at Tottenham? And, in particular, the role he played in the emergence of players like Kane? Probably not. The former Tottenham boss is obviously bitter about his departure from the club, but the decision was quite clearly the right one, with Mauricio Pochettino taking the club to new heights under his watch. While his comments on Kane are interesting, fans will not be happy with his suggestion that they did not support Kane before his breakthrough.
