Robbie Savage revealed that he believes Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne deserves to be named Player of the Year ahead of Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

The BT Sports pundit stated that De Bruyne was personally his POTY, and suggested that the Man City midfielder deserved the accolade as he was more likely to lift a trophy this season than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah or Kane.

“For pure goalscoring alone, Salah and Kane have been exceptional,” wrote Savage in his Daily Mirror column.

“Kane’s prolific form is almost taken for granted now, while Salah has been an absolute revelation for Liverpool in his first season at Anfield.

“But unless Tottenham win the FA Cup or Liverpool win the Champions League – both perfectly possible – neither of them is going to finish the season with a winner’s medal.

“De Bruyne, on the other hand, will win at least two – the Premier League title and the League Cup – and he could complete a treble if City win the European Cup as well.”

Savage went on to share that Sir Alex Ferguson was horrified that Spurs’ David Ginola won Footballer of the Year when his Manchester United side won the treble in 1999.

The pundit added that he believes in an “ideal world” the award should go to a player from the best team.

OPINION

Kane has been sensational once again for Spurs this season, scoring 35 goals in 39 appearances. While Savage’s logic is flawed, about a player from the best team deserving the accolade, De Bruyne probably should be named POTY ahead of the Spurs forward. It’s hard to decide between the pair, because both are tremendous talents, but De Bruyne has been slightly better all round this season than Kane, especially in the Premier League. The Manchester City midfielder has pulled the strings for his side during this campaign, registering 19 assists in 43 appearances. However with that said, there are still a few games left of the season to go. If Kane returns from injury and somehow manages to raise the level of his game even more, than he could snatch the award out of De Bruyne’s hands, although the same could be said about Salah.
