Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane’s target of becoming the record goalscorer in Premier League history could help the club keep hold of the superstar, according to The Times

The newspaper claim that the 24-year-old has set himself the career target of beating Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals in the competition, which would see him spend most of his career in England.

The Times report that Kane’s ambition will likely have an effect on his future career decisions, and with it being unlikely that Spurs would sell him to a rival, would mean spending a long time at the club.

It is said that a world-record bid from Real Madrid could possibly tempt Spurs into selling their star man, especially after they have bedded into their new stadium.

Kane is currently 26th on the Premier League goalscoring list with 102 goals, but his strike rate of 0.71 goals per game is the best in the table.

OPINION

Kane is a highly ambitious individual and it is clear that he has had Shearer’s record in his sights since he started scoring on a regular basis for Spurs. If he does stay at the club for the majority of his career there is no reason why he could not get there, with his goals-to-games ratio the best of the lot. However, it is doubtful that this will affect his decision if a big team like Real do come in for him in a season or two and Spurs are no closer to winning a trophy.
