Tottenham Hotspur need to make a statement this summer.

Spurs are heading into their new stadium and into a new era in the history, and in order to kick things off in the right way, the club must move for one special player.

As reported by Sport Bild, Borussia Dortmund are set to intensify talks with Marco Reus over a new contract after the Germany international forward returned from a long-term injury absence.

However, the German newspaper claim that Reus, while still retaining a desire to stay at his boyhood club, is to wait until the summer to assess his options.

The 28-year-old will reportedly wait until the conclusion of the World Cup to see who is Dortmund manager next season, and what moves the club are to make in the transfer market.

Reus’ current deal at the Westfalenstadion runs until the summer of 2019, and that opens the door to potential bidders to come in for him.

Tottenham must be one of those bidders, and they must come out on top for Reus’ signature.

Signing the Germany international would not just be a statement, but it would be the perfect statement at the perfect time for Spurs.

Reus would take the Spurs attack to another level as they head into the new stadium, and would turn the club into genuine title contenders next year.

If you take a quick glance at the winger’s stats, you can instantly see what he would bring to the side.

The 28-year-old has 91 goals in 194 appearances for Dortmund, along with 61 assists. That level of goalscoring for a winger is sensational.

Spurs are too heavily reliant on the goals of star man Harry Kane at the moment, and without Kane the club would be in a worrying position.

While they do have players like Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli who also score regularly, they need to introduce another presence into the side that will take the pressure off Kane.

At almost one goal every two games in his Dortmund career, it is clear that Reus could be that man.

And it is not just goals that Reus brings to the side, but assists too, and with players like Kane and Son in the side, there is no shortage of finishers at Spurs.

There is one clear issue with Reus, and that is injuries.

The 28-year-old has proved to be injury prone throughout his career, and so Spurs will have to keep an eye on his progress between now and the summer.

But things are so far looking up for Reus, who has scored twice in his first three league appearances since returning.

It would be a risky signing in some ways, but a brilliant one in so many other ways, and it is one that Spurs should look to make at the end of the season.
