Paris St-Germain are ready to enter the race for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld, according to the Telegraph

The newspaper report that Manchester United and Barcelona are also interested in the 29-year-old, whose future at Spurs is in doubt after failing to agree a new contract with the club.

The Telegraph claim that Tottenham may listen to bids in the region of £40million this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino set to green light his exit if the right offer is submitted.

It is said that PSG are encouraged by their good relationship with Tottenham in recent windows, with Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura both arriving at Spurs from Paris.

Alderweireld’s current deal with Spurs runs until the summer of 2019, and the club have an option to extend that for one more year, but if that clause is triggered then there will be a period where Alderweireld is free to leave for just £25million.

PSG are the runaway leaders in Ligue 1 this season, currently holding a 17-point advantage over second-placed Monaco.

Good move for Tottenham Hotspur?

No.

Losing Alderweireld would be a massive blow for Tottenham, who are on the verge of creating a squad that can consistently challenge for silverware.

The Belgian enforcer has been missing for most of the season through injury, but a fit Alderweireld is key to Tottenham’s chances going forward.

That being said, if they were to lose him, then selling to PSG would be a better option than to domestic rivals such as Manchester United.

Likely to happen?

While Alderweireld has not signed a contract extension with Tottenham yet, there has been no indication that he will definitely not do so.

If he is to sign a new deal, it is likely he will wait until the end of the season to do so, and therefore we will have to be patient to see what happens.

A bidding war between several clubs would be to the benefit of Tottenham, who could be in line for a fee of more than the mooted £40million if the Belgian decides he does want to leave.

If that does ensue, then you would think that PSG are in a good position to come out on top considering their abundant riches.
