Overlooked Newcastle duo Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey are still being considered for England’s World Cup squad along with surprise name Paul Dummett, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper report that England will return to check on Lascelles and Shelvey when the Premier League resumes after the international break after both were omitted from Gareth Southgate’s latest squad.

The Chronicle claim that both players were left disappointed by the snub after showing good form recently, but Southgate has reportedly not ruled out either making the final squad for the tournament this summer.

It is also said that England are considering a shock call-up for left-back Dummett, who has made two senior appearances for Wales.

However, with both those coming in friendlies, the wing-back is still free to play for England, and is now under consideration after his good form for the Magpies recently.

OPINION

It was a massive shame to see neither Shelvey nor Lascelles receive a call-up from Southgate for the latest England squad. Shelvey has been instrumental for Newcastle recently, and lost out in the squad to Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook. You do feel that if Shelvey continues his good form, he will be in with a shout come summer. Lascelles has been more consistent than Shelvey, and has shown enough to get that elusive senior call-up at some point soon. However, there is some good competition at centre-back for England, and it looks a long shot that he will be selected for the World Cup. Dummett’s call-up looks even more fanciful, although if there are injuries between now and the tournament then anything could happen.
