Manchester United have made ‘discreet enquiries’ about the availability of Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper report that the Red Devils have now joined the race to sign the 23-year-old flyer, who may leave the Emirates this summer.

The Mirror report that United have asked to be kept abreast of any developments with Bellerin’s position at the club, with Italian giants Juventus the favourites to sign him.

It is said that Bellerin’s transfer would potentially generate money for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to overhaul his squad in the upcoming window.

Bellerin’s deal in north London runs until 2023, meaning the right-back would not come cheap for those looking to buy him in the coming months.

Good move for Manchester United?

It would seem a bit strange for United to spend big money on Bellerin, as they are not particularly short at right-back.

Antonio Valencia has been one of their top players for years now, with Matteo Darmian and Ashley Young potential back-ups.

Darmian may well be on his way this summer, but a move for Bellerin still seems a bit wasteful.

The Spaniard would likely command a fee well in excess of £40million, which is money that could easily be spent much more sensibly elsewhere.

Likely to happen?

You would think not.

Arsenal would not be willing to sell to a near rival such as United.

United will most likely be unwilling to spend the money that would be required to prise Bellerin from the Gunners.

All in all, it looks an unlikely situation.
