Football legend Lothar Matthaus warned Liverpool that they could struggle to hold on to Mohamed Salah if Barcelona or Real Madrid try to sign him in the summer.

The World Cup winner shared that he thought that the Reds had dealt with losing Philippe Coutinho, but admitted that the club could be set to have to deal with another key player leaving, in the form of Salah.

“You know exactly when it’s coming,” warned Matthaus, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“A team like Barcelona, to play with Messi, a team like Real Madrid, the name of Real Madrid.

“Liverpool has a long tradition of being a big club but in another way when some clubs like Real Madrid or Barcelona is coming you have to understand his mind maybe will change in another championship.”

The 25-year-old winger only arrived at Anfield in the summer after joining from AS Roma, and has been in sensational form in his debut season.

So far during the current campaign, Salah has scored 36 goals in 41 appearances.

OPINION

If people aren’t questioning whether Salah is a one-season wonder, then they’re suggesting that he is bound to leave Anfield in the summer. Matthaus is the latest person to reveal that they believe Salah could end up at Barcelona or Real Madrid in the near future. The 25-year-old has well and truly put his name on the map for a legendary player like Matthaus to talk about him, but for Liverpool’s sake you have to hope he is wrong. Salah is too important to Jurgen Klopp’s plans for next season, to be sold in the summer. The Spanish giants will no doubt try their best to lure him away from Anfield, but the Reds have to shut down every advance they make.
