Nottingham Forest legend Kenny Burns believes Everton’s Kieran Dowell should go out on loan again next season.

The 20-year-old midfielder is currently on loan at Forest and his ability has captured the eye of club legend Burns, who couldn’t praise the starlet’s talent enough.

“He’s definitely got talent, Dowell,” said Burns in his column for the Nottingham Post.

“He’s a very, very good player, he’s got loads of tricks up his sleeve, he’s good on the ball and he can find the back of the net.”

“He was brilliant earlier on in the season but has not been at his best for us lately, you get that with young players, though, their form can be up and down.”

Burns went on to state that he thinks Dowell needs to start chasing back more and putting in more tackles, and that another season in the Championship could toughen him up.

This led to the Forest legend suggesting that the midfielder shouldn’t be at Goodison Park next season, but instead spend another campaign out on loan.

“I can’t see him being a regular for Everton next season,” stated Burns.

He might play the odd game for them, but for me, he’d be better off going out on loan again.

“I think that would be best for his development. You learn so much more playing week in, week out.”

OPINION

Dowell’s Toffees contract expires in 2019, so he really needs to start impressing those at Goodison Park. However, Burns is probably right to suggest that the midfielder will struggle to feature at the Toffees next season. This will especially be the case if Sam Allardyce remains manager, as the experienced boss has a reputation for not giving youth players a chance. Burns also stated in his column that Dowell could return for another spell at Forest next season, but it might be worth him going to another club. The 20-year-old should try to experience working under as many different managers as possible, while he can, as it might teach him a thing or two.
