Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson has revealed that he is keen to hold talks with the club about next season.

The 27-year-old has confirmed that he wants discussions with the Whites about where they are heading after a disappointing campaign at Elland Road.

Thomas Christiansen started the season tasked with launching a promotion bid and was sacked mid-season after falling away, while current boss Paul Heckingbottom sees his side side 12 points adrift of the play-offs.

Jansson was asked about next season by Swedish outlet Expressen and detailed about the talks he wants.

“We’ll see what’s happening, I want to hear from the club how to look next year and so on,” he said.

The no-nonsense centre-back has been an ever-present in the starting XI during his second season with Leeds and is considered one of their key players.

However, he has been unable to inspire a real promotion push and once again the Whites look set for another season in the Championship next year after promising so much.

OPINION

Jansson is definitely one of the more senior players in the Leeds dressing room and fans will rightfully be concerned about losing him over the summer. Heckingbottom needs to ensure that the Sweden international is on side as he is going to be vital in any sort of promotion bid next year. He has shown he can be a key figure in the Leeds backline and he managed to recover from a dip in form earlier this campaign. Jansson formed a brilliant understanding alongside loanee Kyle Bartley in the 2016/17 campaign and his partnership with Liam Cooper this year has not reached the same dizzy heights. Heckingbottom may have a big decision to make over his preferred centre-back pairing, but one certainty is that powerhouse Jansson has to play if he is still at the club.
