Paul Heckingbottom must stick with Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald in midweek despite an outcry on Twitter for him to be replaced against Derby County.

The Whites travel to Derby on Wednesday night for a Championship clash and the 27-year-old is firmly under the spotlight following his recent performances.

He made an epic blunder at the weekend from a long throw-in against Bristol City and the shot-stopper was dropped as number one earlier in the season by ex-boss Thomas Christiansen.

Leeds fans on Twitter have demanded the youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell replaces Wiedwald against Derby, while number two option Andy Lonergan could also be explored.

However, Heckingbottom must show faith in under-fire goalkeeper Wiedwald and stick with him for the rest of the season.

Peacock-Farrell, 21, has made just one senior appearance during this career and it would be too big an ask for him to continue for the rest of the season in the senior team.

Meanwhile, 34-year-old Lonergan got his first-team chance earlier in the season and proved he can’t make a serious impact at Elland Road.

Wiedwald remains the best option in goal for the Yorkshire giants and Heckingbottom can’t afford to swap such a crucial position at this time of the season.

The German shot-stopper will be desperate to make up for his mistakes and he should be given a vote of confidence by starting against Derby.

Leeds may need to explore the possibility of strengthening in goal in the summer, but for now they must get behind Wiedwald as he could still play a key role if they are to make a late dart to the play-offs.
