Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles is currently being eyed by Premier League rivals Chelsea, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that the Blues could move for the defender in the summer transfer window as he has been on their radar since 2016.

It is understood the centre-back is currently on a £50,000-a-week deal at St James’ Park, but English giants Chelsea could give him a huge pay increase to try tempt him to Stamford Bridge.

The report details that Newcastle don’t plan to entertain any bids at the ned of the season for the 24-year-old and manager Rafael Benitez views him as a key component at the club.

However, with Benitez’s long-term future still unclear, Chelsea could be given a boost in their transfer pursuit if there is a change of manager.

Chelsea want to add more English players to their squad and are now eyeing Newcastle’s star Lascelles, but had no English starters in their midweek draw against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Good move for Newcastle?

The worst case scenario for Newcastle in the summer would be to lose their manager followed by powerhouse defender Lascelles.

The Magpies must ensure they keep the ball-playing centre-back who should be on the brink of an England call-up.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle are believed to hold a firm stance on Lascelles and don’t intend to sell, but a lot could change come the end of the season.

They would find it very difficult to keep their leader if they were relegated from the top flight and Chelsea have a lot of financial power to try help get a deal over the line.
