West Ham transfer target Scott Arfield is being chased by MLS sides Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact, according to The Sun.

The newspaper report that the MLS duo are showing strong interest in making the 29-year-old Burnley midfielder a ‘designated player’ for the 2018 season, meaning he can be paid above the salary cap.

The Canada international is out of contract this summer and will likely be available on a free transfer, with Burnley yet to agree terms of a new deal with Arfield.

It is said that Hammers boss David Moyes is still chasing Arfield after January interest, but now faces strong competition for the Scotland-born midfielder.

Good move for West Ham?

Not particularly.

Arfield has shown little during his time at Burnley to suggest that he is worthy of a move to West Ham, who should be looking for players to help them push on to bigger things after this poor season.

That is not to say that Arfield is a bad footballer, but just that the Hammers need to be looking for players who will help push them on to the next level.

Likely to happen?

If this MLS interest is serious, then you would think not.

Arfield is a Canada international, and with both Canadian outfits keen on bringing him in, it is a move that makes sense for both parties.

The 29-year-old would be a ‘designated player’ in the MLS, which would see him earn a handsome salary, and that would also suggest a move across the Atlantic is the most likely option.
