West Ham manager David Moyes has revealed he is to take greater control of the club’s transfer policy despite his future after this summer being uncertain.
As reported by The Times, co-chairman and key transfer figure David Sullivan is to take a step back from leading the club’s recruitment drive as they look to restructure.
The recent departure of recruitment chief Tony Henry, dismissed after suggesting the club would not sign any more African players, has reportedly led to the overhaul.
As quoted by The Times, Moyes said: “You are only as good as your last window in who you sign and what you do, but we are going to try and look at it slightly different.
“They have signed an awful lot of good players here, so there’s no criticism, but we’re going to set up something that hopefully gives us another look. The chairman is going to try to stand aside a bit from it.
“It doesn’t mean you win games and ultimately I’ll be judged by winning games.”
Moyes signed a contract with West Ham until the end of the season after taking over from Slaven Bilic in November, and it is not clear if he has done enough to earn a new contract.
The Hammers beat Watford 2-0 at the weekend to put more distance between themselves and the relegation zone, now sitting in 12th, four points above the bottom three.
OPINION
It is slightly surprising to hear that Moyes will take charge of the club’s transfers despite his long-term future being uncertain, but it does suggest that he will be at the club after the summer. There would be little point allowing him to do so if he is to leave in the coming months. On the reshuffle itself, it makes sense, as a manager having control over signings is always a sensible move. It will also take some pressure of Sullivan, who has come in for a lot of criticism from fans recently.
